"Man and beast are interdependent upon this finite planet of ours, along with other elements - soil, water and air - which all comprise the earth's fragile outer crust we refer to as the biosphere", states the Director General of the Tanzania National Parks (TANAPA), Lota Melamari, in his foreword to policy papers.
"The continued health, welfare, and survival of our parks and wildlife reflect the status of the human condition. The demand placed on our parks and wildlife by increasing population pressures and exploitation now threaten their very existence."
A balance must be struck between preservation and use so that the Serengeti's unique eco-system can be enjoyed by future generations.
A tough job. And just as in nature cooperation is the key. The Frankfurt Zoological Society (FZS) has supported TANAPA's efforts for many years providing know-how and financial means for innumerable projects in Tanzania. This website is only one example for their successful cooperation. Ever since Professor Bernhard Grzimek, then the Society's President, first came to the Serengeti in the 1950's, FZS and TANAPA have formed a strong and lasting bond preserving the countries natural wonders. |
